Choose Joy
Friday night while I was bragging about Tate being able to tie his shoes by himself for the first time in a long time, he was at his friend Clark’s house playing a cello! MaryJane texted me a video of them playing together. I could see Tate smiling in the video, his body moving with the music. I was overjoyed. A little later Stephanie Ross sent me two more videos. I have watched each of them about 20 times.
Tate realized something very important Friday night: he can choose joy.
Tate has an appointment tomorrow morning with the Nurse Practitioner Angela. He’s going to get Vincristine and Methotrexate through his port and begin a 5-day course of steroids. Vincristine is the drug that does terrible things to his nerves and makes his fingers curl up. If this month’s treatment is anything like last month’s, it will take Tate 8 days to start feeling like himself again. Tate injured his toe Friday night and has not been able to walk since. We’re going to get that checked out while we’re there to see if anything needs to be done to get him back on his feet as soon as possible.
I spent much of today preparing for 8 potentially crummy recovery days. I went grocery shopping and did some meal prep so we would have some meals ready to heat up when we need them. I cleaned the car and loaded the wheelchair with footrests. I gave the cat a bath. Everything is looking ship shape.
I’ll post an update after Tate’s appointment tomorrow and leave you with this picture Emma sent me of their Friday night dinner at Subway.

Oh Tate, thank you for your courage & joy. To mass I go for you this morning.
